bel fuse inc. 206 van vorst street, jersey city, nj 07302 ? tel 201-432-0463 ? fax 201-432-9542 ? www.belfuse.com 13 non-isolated dc/dc converters 6.0 vdc - 14 vdc input, 0.8 vdc - 2.75 vdc /30 a outputs jan. 11, 2010 bel power inc., a subsid iary of bel fuse inc. safety considerations for safety agency approval the power module must be inst alled in compliance with the spacing and separation requirements of the end-use safety agency standards, i.e., ul 60950-1, csa c22.2 no. 60950-1-03, and vde 0850:2001-12 (en60950-1) licensed. the slin-30e1ax was tested using a 30a, time delay fuse in the ungrounded input. for the converter output to be considered meeting the requir ements of safety extra-low voltage (selv), the input must meet selv requirements. the power module has ex tra-low voltage (elv) outputs when all inputs are elv. the input to these units is to be provided with a time- delay fuse with a maximum rating of 30a in the positive input lead. remote on/off parameter min typ max unit notes signal low (unit on) -0.3 - 1.2 v signal high (unit off) active low 3.0 - vin,max v the remote on/off pin open, unit off. the slin-30e1ax power modules feature an on/off pin for remote on/off operation. if not using the on/off pin, connect the pin to ground (the module will be on). the on/off signal (v on/off ) is referenced to ground. the circuit configuration for remote on/off operation of the module using the on/off pin is shown below. during a logic high on the on/off pin (transistor q1 is off), the module remains off. the external resistor r1 should be chosen to maintain 3.0v minimum on the on/o ff pin to ensure that the module is off when transistor q1 is in the off state. suitable values for r1 are 4.7k for input voltage of 12v and 3k for 5vin. during logic- low when q1 is turned on, the module is turned on. the on/off pin can also be used to synchronize the out put voltage start-up and shutdown of multiple modules in parallel. by connecting on/off pins of multiple modules , the output start-up can be synchronized (please refer to characterization curves). when on/off pins are connecte d together, all modules will s hutdown if any one of the modules gets disabled due to under voltage lockout or over temperature protection 100k q1 gnd pwm enable on/off vin+ on/off _ + i v module r1 on/off 1k 100k thermal sd remote on/off implementation using on/off

bel fuse inc. 206 van vorst street, jersey city, nj 07302 ? tel 201-432-0463 ? fax 201-432-9542 ? www.belfuse.com 16 non-isolated dc/dc converters 6.0 vdc - 14 vdc input, 0.8 vdc - 2.75 vdc /30 a outputs jan. 11, 2010 bel power inc., a subsid iary of bel fuse inc. output voltage sequencing the slin-30e1ax modules include a sequencing feature t hat enables users to implemen t various types of output voltage sequencing in their applications. this is acco mplished via an additional sequencing pin. when not using the sequencing feature, either tie the seq pin to vin or leave it unconnected. when an analog voltage is applied to the seq pin, the out put voltage tracks this voltage until the output reaches the set-point voltage. the final value of the seq volt age must be set higher than the set-point voltage of the module. the output voltage follows the voltage on the seq pin on a one-to-one basis. by connecting multiple modules together, multiple modules can track their output voltages to the voltage applied on the seq pin. for proper voltage sequencing, first, input voltage is applie d to the module. the on/off pin of the module is left unconnected (or tied to gnd for negative logic modules or tied to vin for positive logic modules) so that the module is on by default. after applying input voltage to the module, a minimum 10msec delay is required before applying voltage on the seq pin. this delay gives the module enough time to complete its internal power-up soft- start cycle. during the delay time, the seq pin should be held close to ground (nominally 50mv 20 mv). this is required to keep the internal op-amp out of saturation t hus preventing output overshoot during the start of the sequencing ramp. by selecting resistor r1 according to the following equation: 05 . 0 24950 1 ? = in v r ohms the voltage at the sequencing pin will be 50mv when the sequencing signal is at zero. r1 gnd vin+ seq + - out 10k 499k module circuit showing connection of the sequencing signal to the seq pin after the 10msec delay, an analog voltage is applied to the seq pin and the output voltage of the module will track this voltage on a one-to-one volt basis until the out put reaches the set-point voltage. to initiate simultaneous shutdown of the modules, the seq pin vo ltage is lowered in a controlled manner. the output voltage of the modules tracks the volt ages below their set-point voltages on a one-to-one basis. a valid input voltage must be maintained until the tracking and output voltages reach ground potential. when using the sequencing feature to control start-up of the module, pre-bias i mmunity during start-up is disabled. the pre-bias immunity f eature of the module relies on the module being in the diode-mode during start- up. when using the sequencing feature, modules goes thro ugh an internal set-up time of 10msec, and will be in synchronous rectification mode when the vo ltage at the seq pin is applied. this will result in the module sinking current if a pre-bias voltage is present at the output of the module. when pre-bias immunity during start-up is required, the sequencing feature must be disabled. for additional guidelines on using the sequencing feature please contact the bel power technical representatives for additional information.
bel fuse inc. 206 van vorst street, jersey city, nj 07302 ? tel 201-432-0463 ? fax 201-432-9542 ? www.belfuse.com 17 non-isolated dc/dc converters 6.0 vdc - 14 vdc input, 0.8 vdc - 2.75 vdc /30 a outputs jan. 11, 2010 bel power inc., a subsid iary of bel fuse inc. active load sharing for additional power requirements, the slin-30e1ax power m odule is also available with a parallel option. up to five modules can be configured, in parallel, with active load sharing. good layout techniques should be observed when using mult iple units in parallel. to implement forced load sharing, the following connections should be made: ? the share pins of all units in parallel must be conne cted together. the path of these connections should be as direct as possible. ? all remote-sense pins should be connected to the po wer bus at the same point, i.e., connect all the sense(+) pins to the (+) side of the bus. close pr oximity and directness are necessary for good noise immunity. some special considerations apply for desig n of converters in parallel operation: ? when sizing the number of modules required for paralle l operation, take note of the fact that current sharing has some tolerance. in addition, under transient conditions such as a dynamic load change and during startup, all converter output currents will not be equal. to allow for such variation and avoid the likelihood of a converter shutting off due to a current overload, the total capacity of the paralleled system should be no more than 75% of the sum of the individual converters . as an example, for a syst em of four slin-30e1ax converters in parallel, the total current drawn shoul d be less that 75% of (4 x 30a) , i.e. less than 90a. ? all modules should be turned on and off together. this is so that all modules come up at the same time avoiding the problem of one converter sourcing current into the other leading to an over current trip condition. to ensure that all modules come up simultaneously, the on/ off pins of all paralleled converters should be tied together and the converters enabled and disabled using the on/off pin. the share bus is not designed for redundant operation and the system will be non-functional upon failure of one of the unit when multiple units are in parallel. in particula r, if one of the converters shuts down during operation, the other converters may also shut down due to their out puts hitting current limit. in such a situation, unless a coordinated restart is ensured, the sy stem may never properly restart since di fferent converters will try to restart at different times causing an overload condition and subsequent shutdown. this situation can be avoided by having an external output voltage monitor circuit that det ects a shutdown condition and forces all converters to shut down and restart together. tunable loop tm the slin-30e1ax modules have a new feature that optim izes transient response of the module called tunable loop tm . external capacitors are usually added to the output of the module for two reasons: to reduce output ripple and noise and to reduce output voltage deviations from the st eady-state value in the presence of dynamic load current changes. adding external capacitance however a ffects the voltage control loop of the module, typically causing the loop to slow down with sluggish response. larger values of external capacitance could also cause the module to become unstable. the tunable loop tm allows the user to externally adjust the vo ltage control loop to match the filter network connected to the output of the module. the tunable loop tm is implemented by connecting a series r-c between the sense and trim pins of the module. this r-c allows the user to externally adjust the voltage loop feedback compensation of the module.

bel fuse inc. 206 van vorst street, jersey city, nj 07302 ? tel 201-432-0463 ? fax 201-432-9542 ? www.belfuse.com 24 non-isolated dc/dc converters 6.0 vdc - 14 vdc input, 0.8 vdc - 2.75 vdc /30 a outputs jan. 11, 2010 bel power inc., a subsid iary of bel fuse inc. surface mount information pick and place the slin-30e1ax modules use an open frame constructi on and are designed for a fully automated assembly process. the modules are fitted with a label designed to provide a large surface area for pick and place operations. the label meets all the requirements for surf ace mount processing, as well as safety standards, and is able to withstand reflow temperatures of up to 300 o c. the label also carries product information such as part number and serial number. pick and place location. nozzle recommendations the module weight has been kept to a minimum by us ing open frame construction. even so, these modules have a relatively large mass when compared to conventional smt components. variables such as nozzle size, tip style, vacuum pressure and pick & placement speed should be considered to optimize this process. the minimum recommended inside nozzle diameter for reliable operation is 3mm. the maximum nozzle outer diameter, which will safely fit within the allowable component spacing, is 5 mm max. tin lead soldering the slin-30e1ax power modules are lead free modules and can be soldered either in a lead-free solder process or in a conventional tin/lead (sn/pb) pr ocess. it is recommended that the customer review data sheets in order to customize the solder reflow profile for each applicat ion board assembly. the following instructions must be observed when soldering these units. failure to observe thes e instructions may result in the failure of or cause damage to the modules, and can adversely affect long-term reliability. in a conventional tin/lead (sn/pb) solder process pea k reflow temperatures are limited to less than 235 o c. typically, the eutectic solder melts at 183 o c, wets the land, and subsequentl y wicks the device connection. sufficient time must be allowed to fuse the plating on the connection to ensure a reliable solder joint. there are several types of smt reflow technologies currently used in the industry. these surface mount power modules can be reliably soldered using natural forced convection, ir (radiant infrared), or a combination of convection/ir. for reliable soldering the solder reflow profile should be established by accurately measuring the modules cp connector temperatures. lead free soldering the slin-30e1ax modules are lead-free (pb-free) and rohs compliant and are both forward and backward compatible in a pb-free and a snpb soldering process. failure to observe the instru ctions may result in the failure of or cause damage to the modules and can adversely affect long-term reliability.
