HFC0310 ?fixed-frequency f l yback controller hfc031 0 rev. 1 . 01 www.monolithicpower.com 12 6/19/2012 mps proprietar y information. pate nt protec ted. un authorized photo c op y and d uplication prohibited. ? 2012 mps. all rights reserved. sw itching frequenc y the capacitor between the fset pin and gnd sets the switching frequency of the HFC0310. estimate the oscillator frequency as per the equation below: s 9 6 1 fh z 0.87 400 1 0 c 53 1 0 ? ? = + over volta ge protection monitoring the v cc pin via a 20s time constant filter allows t he hfc031 0 to enter ovp during an over-voltage condition; t y pically wh en v cc goe s above 24.5v. the controller will resum e operation aft er the fault d i sappears. over-cu rre nt protection the hfc03 10 continuo usly monitors the fb pin. when fb pulls up to 3.8v, if after a 8192 switching cycle delay the fault signal is st ill present, the HFC0310 shuts down as soon as the power supply undergoes an ov erload. whe n the fault disappears, th e power supply resumes operation. short-circu it protection by monitori ng the cs pin, the hf c0310 shuts down when the voltage rises highe r than 1.65 v, to indicate a short cir c uit . the HFC0310 enters a safe low-po wer mode that prevents any letha l thermal or stress damage. as so on as the f ault disappears, the power supply resumes operation . thermal shutdow n when the temperature o f the ic e x c eeds 150c, the otp is activated and the controller ente r s auto-recovery mode. burst ope r ation to minimize stand-by power consumption, the HFC0310 i m plements burst mode at no load or light load. a s the load d ecreases, th e fb voltag e decreases. the ic stop s switch ing when the f b voltage drops below th e lower threshold, v br ul (0.5v). then the outpu t voltage drops at a rat e dependent on the load. this ca uses the fb voltage to rise again due to the negative feedback control loop. once the fb voltag e exceeds the upper threshold, v bruh (0.7v), t he switching p u lse re sumes. the fb voltage th en decreases a nd the whol e process repeats. burst- mode operation alternat ely enables and disable s the switching pulse of the mosfet. hence switching lo ss at no loa d or light lo ad condition s is greatly reduced. figure 4 shows the signals genera t ed by burst- mode operation. v fb v ds 0.7v 0.5v figure 4: bu rst-mode o p eration pro pin the pro p i n provides extra protection again s t abnormal conditions. u s e the pro pin for input ovp and/or other prot ections. if t he pro pin voltage exc eeds 3.25v, the ic shu t s down. as soon as the fault d i sap pears, the power supply resumes operation. leading-edge blanking (leb) in normal o peration, a shunt resistor between th e source pin and ground senses the primary pea k current. the fb voltage sets the turn-off threshold of the mosfet, v sense =v fb /3. when the shunt r e sistor volt age drops t o v sense , th e mosfet tu rns off. during start-up and over-load condition, th e primary pe ak current threshold is int e rna lly limited to 0.95v even if v fb volta ge exceeds 2.85v to av oid excessive output po wer and low e r the switch voltage rating .
